The Differentiated Classroom

“If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”― Ignacio Estrada

As a teacher, managing a class with students of different levels of intelligence can be a daunting task. It requires not only a deep understanding of each student’s unique abilities but also an ability to create an inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and supported.

If we begin with the premise that all students are inherently unique and have different interests, learning styles, strengths and experiences, then we know that they will require different instructional strategies to help them reach their potential as learners and beyond. This can be done through standardized tests, observation, and interaction with students, so they can create lesson plans that are tailored to the individual needs.

It is important to keep in mind that a classroom with students of different levels of intelligence does not necessarily mean that some students are smarter than others for students learn in unique ways and there is no one-size-fits-all approach that can be applied. An educator must therefore be knowledgeable about how to reframe or re-present a lesson and learning environment in a way that is specific to the needs of each student.

To conduct such a class effectively, one needs to incorporate different teaching strategies, for eg. visual learners may benefit from visual aids, such as diagrams and videos, while auditory learners may benefit from lectures and class discussions while others from hands-on learning and collaboration.

It is important to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of all students, regardless of their level of intelligence, encourage them to set personal goals and strive towards achieving them.

In conclusion, conducting multiple level intelligence classes requires patience, perseverance, empathy, and a willingness to adapt teaching methodology to meet the needs of students. It is the responsibility of the facilitator to create an inclusive learning environment where students feel valued and supported which helps them achieve their full potential to become lifelong learners.
