BREAK the BIAS – by MLC School, Australia

‘Break the bias’ was an online round square event organised by MLC School, Australia on 3rd August 2022. The event started off with two guest speakers, sharing challenges, difficulties and evolution in gender bias that they had faced in their personal lives and respective work fields. After the enlightening briefing session, all the participants were divided into various groups or barazas. The Barazzas had a fruitful discussion on general gender bias, whether it is conscious or unconscious. They talked upon how normalized bias is in their respective surroundings and fields of interest, whether it was in subjects at school or as simple as sports.

They discussed various types of biases the participants, as individuals, have faced in their personal lives and how they dealt with them, touched upon the strict mindset of certain parts of specific societies and even the role schools play in overcoming these biases.

Furthermore, the participants gave their views on how women are perceived in a society today and how willing people in general are to accept them in fields that were once male dominated. The question that arose from these discussions was how one could overcome this bias and whose responsibility it was to stand up against them. After a long debate and discussion, it was agreed upon that it was up to the people, not alone, but together, as a whole, to break the chain and stereotypes on women. The discussion was concluded by understanding the importance of women at higher posts as well as us individuals to help break the cycle of bias and pledge to take a step towards evolution. In all, it was truly a wonderful learning experience.

The mentor teachers for the event was Mrs. Ruchi Seth and Ms. Vidhupriya Rastogi (RS Coordinator).
